Why your website doesn't show up on Google (and how to check)

The most common reasons a website doesn't appear on Google: it isn't indexed, something technical blocks it, it's slow on mobile, it doesn't talk about what people search for or it lacks local signals. And how to check each one.

Is your website indexed?

Before asking why you don't appear for a search, check whether Google knows your site at all. Type site:yourdomain.com into Google: if nothing comes up, Google hasn't indexed it yet.

A new website can take from a few days to several weeks to appear. You can speed it up by adding the domain to Google Search Console, submitting the sitemap and requesting indexing for the main pages with the URL inspection tool.

Is something technical in the way?

Sometimes the site itself tells Google, by accident, not to show it. It happens more than you would think, especially when a site goes live from a test version. The usual suspects:

  • A noindex tag that was left in place.
  • A robots.txt file that blocks crawling.
  • Pages that answer with a server error.
  • Redirect chains, for example from the bare domain to www and from there to another address.
  • A site without HTTPS, which browsers flag as “Not secure”.

Is it slow on mobile?

Google measures the mobile experience with Core Web Vitals: how long the main content takes to appear (LCP), how long the page takes to respond to a tap (INP) and how much things move while loading (CLS). It is not the biggest ranking factor, but a slow site loses visitors before anyone reads a word.

You can measure it with Google's PageSpeed Insights or with our free website audit, which uses the same engine and explains each problem in plain words.

Does your website talk about what people search for?

Google shows pages that answer a specific search. If your site says “integrated solutions” and your customers search for “kitchen renovation in Murcia”, there is no match. Every important service deserves its own page, with a clear title and copy that answers your customers' real questions.

The page title, the blue line in the results, and its description are the first things people read: they should say what you do and where.

And for local searches like “… in Murcia”?

For searches with a city in them, Google usually shows a map with three businesses first. That block comes from Google Business Profiles, not from websites: without a verified profile you cannot appear in it. Reviews, and a name, address and phone number that match everywhere, help you climb.

How long does it take to rank?

Technical problems are fixed in days and Google notices as soon as it crawls the site again. Ranking for a competitive search is different: it depends on content, on the links your site gets from other sites and on the competition, and it is measured in months, not weeks. Narrower searches, with a city, a sector or a problem, are the ones you win first.
